Our two cottages, La Caracola and La Cabaña, are both self-catering accommodation within the grounds of Manzanela. They share the following characteristics:
- Capacity for two to three people
- A double room with bathroom on the first floor
- Open plan dinning and sitting-room on the ground floor
- Well-equipped Kitchen on the ground floor
- Sofabed in the sitting-room area
- A wood stove for the colder months in Winter
- A terrace and open garden for the warm summer months
- Pets are welcome
Our apartments, El Callejón and La Parra, are both on the first floor of the main house of Manzanela. Each has its own independent entrance. Both apartments share the following characteristics:
- Capacity for 4 people
- Two bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with two single beds
- Bathroom
- Central heating
- Equipped kitchen
- Sitting-room and dining area
The Parra has a balcony with views over the valley.
The Callejón has an outside sitting area.
Pets are welcome in the Callejón.
At Manzanela we have a spacious double room with a double bed and a large triple room, with twin beds, which can also convert into a double bed, and a sofa bed.
- Both rooms have an en suite bathroom
- The double room looks out over the rustic patio and the mountains beyond.
- The triple room looks out over the orchard and surrounding mountains.
We can offer breakfast for our guests in the rooms if requested in advance.
The main house of Manzanela is a traditional farm house, which has grown organically since the oldest part was built at the beginning of the 19th Century. The heart of the house is the patio with its many nooks, where guests can relax quietly.
The traditional architecture of the building has been conserved, where possible, with stone walls, old oak and elm beams and original doors. It combines rustic style furniture with other, more modern, hand made furniture.
The decoration colourfully brings together local abstract and traditional art.

Come and get to know the tranquility of Nela. A hamlet situation on the edge of the canyon formed by the river of the same name. Nela is located in the Province of Burgos within the protected Natural Park of Ojo Guareña in the municipality of Merindad de Sotoscueva.
At a stones throw from Manzanela is the river Nela. The river flows through a beautiful canyon just below the village. It is the largest of the tributaries of the great Ebro river in the region of the Merindades. The river is home to trout, barbel and, among other smaller species, there are numerous crayfish, which also provide food for the few otters still living along the course of the river.
This is the local name given to a mountain, which rises up from the village of Nela. The mountain top is known to be the site of an important celtic settlement, remains of which can still be seen amid the wild flower filled meadows walled by the sharp cliffs dropping to the river canyon below.
The long-distance walking route GR1, called the “Historic Path”, passes through northern Spain starting in Girona and finishing in Finisterre. The route crosses the famous pilgrims route to Santiago in Los Arcos (in the province of Navarra) and is recognised as one of the many ancient routes to Santiago. The GR1 passes the doorstep of Manzanela in its passage through the province of Burgos (San Pantaleón de Losa to Corconte).
For those who enjoy walking, there are also many other long and short well-marked hiking routes in the local region.
It is difficult to imagine more ideal surroundings for enjoyable walking and cycling. There are routes of a variety of length and difficulty, through mountains or woods, along riversides and past waterfalls…
You can start directly from our doorstep and set out on the famous GR1 (Gran Recorrido 1) or try one of the many other marked routes close by. There are several circular routes, which start and end at Manzanela. Each trail leads in a different direction and through varied and dramatic landscapes in the heart of the beautiful green region of the Merindades.
Many of the guests to Manzanela bring their bikes, some road bikes and others mountain bikes. There are a variety of different routes through stunning mountainous and wooded landscapes and it is possible to set off directly from Manzanela on circular routes of varying difficulties and lengths.
Burgos province is recognised for its abundance and variety of raptors.The many rocky cliffs and valleys are home to Common Vultures, Egyptian Vultures, Golden Eagle, as well as Peregrine Falcons and Kestrel. In forested zones you can encounter the Buzzard, the Hobby, the Booted Eagle, the Sparrow hawk and even the enigmatic Goshawk, while the more open areas are the preferred habitat of the Snake Eagle, Montague’s Harrier and Black Kite. In the winter months the Black Kite is replaced by the Red Kite.
There are also a wealth of smaller birds, which can be found in the village and along the river including Blackcaps, Song Thrushes, Blue Tits, Goldfinches, Spotted Flycatchers, the Black Redstart, the Rock Sparrow, various types of Woodpecker, Kingfishers and the flash of yellow and beautiful trill of the Golden Oriel…

Manzanela is also home to three horses.
If there are guests, children or adults, who are interested in participating in looking after the horses – feeding them, brushing them, taking them to the river to drink – then they are welcome to join in.
Only 100 meters from Manzanela there is an idylic swimming spot, where the water is deep and you can swim some 200 meters up the river canyon.
There are shallower areas for paddling and looking for crayfish, but also, the more daring, can jump from the cliff outcrops at varying levels into the locally renowned “Pozo del Infierno”.
In this paradise for nature lovers, there are many different outdoor activities to be enjoyed. In addition to beautiful walks and cycling trails it is also possible to do climbing, horse-riding, balloon rides, golf, carting, rafting and many other aquatic sports.

The surroundings of the tranquil riverside village, located in the Heart of the Merindades region, expound with exuberant nature and a great variety in landscapes, flora and fauna. You will find extensive oak and beech forests, rivers flowing through canyons, waterfalls, rolling hills, mountains and spectacular escarpments.
Dotted throughout the region there is an extensive choice of beautiful villages such as Puentedey, Quisicedo, Frias, Espinosa de los Monteros, Orbaneja del Castillo with their local bars and restaurants. There are also a number of isolated hermitages and beautiful Romanesque churches.
All the necessary shops and services can be found in the nearby small town of Villarcayo.

Puentedey is a picturesque village built on top of an enormous natural rock arch formed by the Nela river. This form has been seen by the inhabitants in ancient times as a divine work of art, hence the name of the village: Puentedey meaning “bridge of God”.
The deep and narrow canyon of the Mea is wooded by holly oaks which guard the stunning waterfall of the Mea in the early Spring when the mountain snow has melted. It is a very special waterfall that you can get up close to and even shelter underneath.
Ojo Guareña is a Site of Cultural Interest and a Natural Park. It is one of the largest complex of carstic caves in Europe, extending over an area of 13,850 hectares. There are guided visits of an upper part of the cave system and the hermitage of San Bernabé situated in one of the cave entrances. The more adventurous can also reserve a 2 or 4 hour visit to the Palomera cave galeries.
In the interior of the Dulla mountains amid steep eroded carstic cliffs are a series of canyons with rivers which ebb and flow with the melting of the snow in the early Spring and the rainfall. There are a number of beautiful walks which are well marked in this dramatic mountainous and wooded landscape.

On the banks of the Ebro river as it passes through the picturesque Valley of Manzanedo, rise the remains of the once important Cisterciense Monastery of Rio Seco. The construction of this Monastry started in the 13th Century. Today you can visit the ruins of the Monastry, guided by one of the volunteers participating in its restoration.
Las Pisas is one of the better know waterfalls in the Merindades, it is in the heart of an imposing beech forest. The best time to visit the waterfall is in the early Spring just after the mountain snows have melted or with the forest coloured by Autumn.
Being one of the biggest artificial masses of water in the whole of Spain, the stunning setting of the lake surrounded by the Cantabrian mountains has become a popular spot for Kite Surfing and other aquatic sports.
The architecture of Quisicedo, with its many noble houses, some of which still preserve their coat of arms carved in stone, is typical of the villages in the region. From the centre of this village starts a well-marked 10km circular hiking trail, which leads up through a beautiful beech and oak forest to two stunning waterfalls, which flow all year round.
The small town of Espinosa has an historic centre with numerous noble houses, surrounding the porticoed main square, where the local and rather traditional market is held every Tuesday.
The nearby village of Las Machorras has preserved the traditional ways of life of the Pasiego farming communities. The stunning mountainous landscape is dotted with stone roofed cabins, green meadows, bubbling rivers and waterfalls cutting through diverse deciduous forests.
The small mountain river of the Serna has been the sculptor of one of the most astounding sceneries in the Merindades. Where it channeled through massive jagged cliffs of limestone rock it has formed a landscape which looks like the teeth of some ancient dragon. In the narrowest part of the passage through the canyon the walker can just pass by jumping from one stepping stone to the next, almost touching either cliff wall of the canyon.
The charming riverside village of Pesquera de Ebro has many beautiful old palatial noble houses dating from the 16th to 18th Century. It has an impressive medieval bridge which spans the Ebro River. There are a number of well-marked walking routes which start from here either along the river or the top of the surrounding escarpments.
A short distance above the village there is a viewing platform with spectacular views over one of the Ebro canyons. Often you can see the vultures flying below you or resting on the cliffs which form the steep canyon.
Orbaneja has been proclaimed one of the most beautiful villages of Northern Spain. The village is cut through by a waterfall and the surrounding cliffs and rock formations sculpted by the Ebro river over time are spectacular. Below the village are crystal clear blue pools. There are many other charming villages and stunning landscapes to visit in this region of the Upper Ebro, which is now declared a protected natural area.
The small medieval mountain-top “city” of Frias is another of the emblematic villages of Northern Spain. It is dominated by the remains of a castle which stand out like a tooth at the highest point of the village. The village has been well preserved and, apart from the beautiful medieval bridge over the Ebro, there are many examples of traditional wood beam and adobe buildings as well as houses which hang over the cliffs. Just next to Frias, in a steep gorge, is the small hamlet of Tobera, cut through by waterfalls formed by the Molinar river. The nearby lordly town of Oña clusters around the impressive San Salvador monastery.

San Martin de Elines, has been a protected historic and artistic national monument since 1931, it is one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Cantabria. It is thought to have been built at the beginning of the 12th Century on the remains of a Mozarab style church, remains of which have been dated to the 10th Century and are still visible today.
The Romanesque hermitage of San Panteleón de Losa has a spectacular location on a cliff edge which almost launches it into the sky! The nearby village of Herrán, is another gem of local architecture with several medieval hermitages cut out of the limestone rock. From the village you can walk up through the canyon formed by the river Purón: a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.
